New Delhi, July 21, 2026 — The political fallout from the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) “Chalo Sansad” march intensified on Tuesday, with the Congress escalating its attack on the Narendra Modi government by staging a protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence and demanding accountability for the police action against student demonstrators.
The protest marked the second consecutive day of opposition mobilisation after Monday’s student march, which was organised over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led a sit-in near Lok Kalyan Marg, accusing the Centre of suppressing peaceful protests instead of addressing the concerns of students. Several Congress MPs were reportedly detained by Delhi Police during the demonstration.
The protest also drew support from leaders of other opposition parties. Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) leaders Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule visited the protest site at Jantar Mantar to express solidarity with the students, while senior Congress leaders from different states joined the demonstration.
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress had marched to the Prime Minister’s residence to seek answers over what he described as the “brutalities” inflicted on students during Monday’s protest.
“We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday. The Government doesn’t want to take any accountability nor does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament,” Gandhi wrote.
He further demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that they had “destroyed the future of India’s youth.”
Videos Fuel Political Row
The Congress offensive gathered momentum after multiple videos circulated on social media showing scenes of confrontation between Delhi Police personnel and CJP protesters during Monday’s march towards Parliament.
Several videos appeared to show police using batons to disperse demonstrators as thousands of students attempted to march from Mandi House towards Parliament. Protesters were demanding action over alleged examination irregularities and the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
Clashes broke out after protesters tried to move past security barricades, prompting police to deploy tear gas near Shastri Bhawan. Authorities had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) across parts of central Delhi, while internet services in the area were temporarily suspended as a security measure.
Delhi Police Rejects Allegations
Delhi Police has rejected allegations of excessive force, disputing the narrative emerging from the viral videos.
In an official statement, the police said no lathi-charge had been carried out and urged the public not to rely on misleading social media content. The force maintained that officers handled the protest in accordance with established procedures and exercised restraint while enforcing security restrictions in the high-security zone around Parliament.
