As a key minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, Bhupender Yadav faces a defining challenge that could shape both his political standing and his role in the Cabinet.

New Delhi, July 12, 2026 — With a fresh wave of speculations gaining strength of an impending Cabinet reshuffle, the spotlight has fallen on Union Minister Bhupender Yadav. After four of his personal assistants were purged, political observers believe that Yadav’s position in the Union Cabinet is now under a dark cloud.

Sources close to Yadav claim that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had consulted the minister before taking actions against the PAs. Yadav himself informed that the PAs be removed, said a close confidante of the minister.

But the minister losing his PAs in one go is a rare event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to carry a Cabinet expansion cum reshuffle in the near future. The window to carry out the Cabinet rejig is now short, for the Monsoon session of Parliament begins in the next few days.

Amid the opaqueness surrounding the DoPT action against the PAs of Yadav, conspiracy theories have linked the event to the contentious Aravali Hills proposal of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, which had stoked a major controversy, as well as public outcry. The Supreme Court had afterwards stayed the move of the Ministry even while Yadav had strongly defended the decision of his department in his numerous media interviews.

Sources close to Yadav said that “the Minister is not resigning from the Cabinet. All speculations are imaginations of the people who want to see the Modi government in a bad shape.”

But the rare event of the DoPT against PAs of the minister raises a critical question: How could the minister be unaware of the activities of his close aides. The question raises heat on Yadav.

At the same time, Yadav’s big cushion comes from his close proximity with Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah. Having served as BJP national general secretary when Shah was the party president, Yadav is known to be a close confidante of the Home Minister.

Will Shah help Yadav in getting a benefit of doubt? The answer could be in an affirmative if the PMO has nothing substantial against Yadav and lapses, if any, were limited only at the levels of his PAs.

“There were seven PAs working with the minister. The DoPT has taken actions against four, which included three officials from the department and one who was from outside the government background. There are still three PAs working with the minister,” said a source.
