US Carries Out Regime Changes with Considerations for Fallouts

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, November 30: India’s former high commissioner in Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty has claimed that the US was behind the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh. He expressed doubt if the US President-elect Donald Trump will reverse the Washington policy on Bangladesh.

“The US administration led by President Joe Biden planned the regime change operation in Dhaka,” Chakravarty told stratnewsglobal.com in an interview. The former diplomat charged that the “US carried out the regime change in Bangladesh without taking into account the consequences”.

A number of former diplomats in India have alleged that the US carried out the regime change in Bangladesh. Violent protests led to the overthrow of the Hasina-led regime in Bangladesh. Hasina fled to India after the violent mob laid siege to her official residence in Dhaka.

Chakravarty told Ramananda Sengupta of StratNewsGlobal that the “US had been supportive of Islamist organisations in several parts of the world while carrying out regime changes”. “Although there might be some change once Trump returns to the White House, the deed has been done,” added Chakravarty.

Trump in his Diwali message ahead of the US elections had expressed anguish at the growing attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh after the overthrow of the Hasina-led regime. Trump had assured that he would overturn the Biden policy on Bangladesh.

The Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh Muhammed Yunus had introduced three key activists of the violent agitation at the Clinton Centre felicitation. Yunus had admitted that the agitation against Hasina was “meticulously planned”.

Chakravarty was India’s top diplomat in Bangladesh for two terms. “The Biden administration is responsible for the current situation in Bangladesh. It’s clearly not a happy situation for India,” said Chakravarty in the interview.

The former diplomat rued that “foreign policy projections of a stable, peaceful, democratic periphery remain pipe dream”. “Having decided that Hasina needs to be ousted, Biden’s team planned this operation, and they have succeeded,” stratnewsglobal.com quoted Chakravarty saying in the interview.

He also stressed that the US “sometimes do this regime change operation without giving much thought to the fallout”. “This is what has happened in events all over the world. It’s not good for us; it’s not good for regional stability; and it’s bad for Bangladesh,” added the former diplomat.

The US has been accused of carrying out rhetoric against Hasina in the run up to the Bangladesh national elections. Hasina had also accused in an interview that she had been offered a deal for an exchange of an island to the US for peace in Bangladesh.
