April 26, 2026 — Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, has described the chaotic moments when gunfire erupted during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, forcing security personnel to evacuate Donald Trump from the stage.

Speaking to CBS News, Jiang said the situation unfolded within seconds, transforming a lighthearted moment into a high-security emergency.  “It all happened so fast,” Jiang said, recounting that the incident occurred just after she had begun hosting the evening.

According to Jiang, the event was underway with an entertainer performing when an unusual disturbance was first noticed. “I thought it was a protester — something we’re used to,” she said. “But then I saw SWAT team members come to the head table and rush us to the ground, saying, ‘Down, down, down.’”

Jiang described crawling off the stage alongside others as security teams moved swiftly to secure the area and evacuate key figures, including Trump. Video from the venue shows Jiang ducking and moving quickly as officers surrounded the dais and escorted Trump away.

Once backstage, Jiang said she witnessed a large-scale security deployment. “There were more than a dozen SWAT officers. Secret Service members were everywhere, along with members of the president’s team,” she said.

She added that confusion initially prevailed, with conflicting information circulating in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Despite the panic, Jiang credited the rapid response of law enforcement and security personnel for preventing further harm. “It was remarkable to see that in action. Their quick work protected all of us that night — not just the president, not just the Cabinet, but everybody in that hotel,” she said.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, one of Washington’s most high-profile annual events, typically brings together journalists, politicians and celebrities in a celebratory setting. Saturday night’s disruption marks a rare and alarming breach of that atmosphere.

Authorities have yet to release full details about the source of the gunfire or whether there were any injuries. Security agencies are expected to review protocols following the incident. The episode underscores the persistent security risks surrounding high-profile political gatherings in the United States, even at events traditionally associated with levity and press freedom.
