New Delhi, April 16, 2026 — Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra invoked the Nehru-Gandhi legacy and credited party leaders across generations during a sharp intervention in the Lok Sabha on the women’s reservation and delimitation debate.

Participating in the discussion, Priyanka Gandhi said the roots of women’s political representation in India date back to the early 20th century. “The historical background is that it was also initiated by a man named Nehru… his father, Motilal Nehru, prepared a report in 1928 listing fundamental rights,” she said. She also cited the 1931 Karachi session under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as a key milestone where women’s equal rights became part of India’s political framework.

Highlighting Congress’ role, she noted that 33% reservation in panchayats and municipalities was first introduced under Rajiv Gandhi. She added that the party made another push in 2010 under Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, when the Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha but stalled in the Lok Sabha.

Priyanka Gandhi also referenced Rahul Gandhi’s 2018 letter urging early implementation of women’s reservation, suggesting that the government eventually acted on similar lines in 2023. “The Congress fully supported it in keeping with its ideology,” she said, countering claims that the BJP alone championed the reform.

However, she strongly criticised the proposed delimitation framework. She alleged that using the 2011 Census as the basis could “take away the rights of the OBC community” and lead to injustice. “Our Constitution belongs to everyone; this country belongs to every citizen,” she asserted.

Taking aim at the government’s narrative, she said the ruling party’s claims of sole ownership over women’s reservation were misplaced. “There should be no doubt that the Indian National Congress stands firmly in favour of women’s reservation,” she said.

Her remarks added a dynastic and ideological dimension to an already heated debate over representation, federal balance, and electoral reforms.
