Assam Congress shares ADGP letter to Jharkhand to cover expenses on Sarma’s visits

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi, July 20: The Congress on Saturday alleged that “common people of Assam have to bear the expenses of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Jharkhand election programme”. Sarma is tasked by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to lead the preparations for the Assembly elections.

The Assam unit of the Congress shared a communique of the state government to Jharkhand to seek reimbursements for costs incurred on Sarma’s visit to the state. The Assam unit of the Congress posted a communication by Hiren Nath, additional director general of police (Assam), to his Jharkhand counterpart Ajay Kumar Singh, the state DGP. The letter, marked ‘SECRET’, stated that “the Assam chief minister has been appointed co-incharge by the party (the BJP) of the state and therefore he may visit Jharkhand very frequently for political works”.

Nath mentioned that the chief minister is a Z+ protectee, and all arrangements as per the norms of the Ministry of Home Affairs be made during the visit of Sarma to Jharkhand.

“I would like you to further request that, all bills on expenses incurred during the visit of the chief minister to the state of Jharkhand be sent for reimbursement by the government of Assam,” Nath wrote in the communication.

Union Minister for Agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Sarma are looking after the poll preparations of the BJP in Jharkhand. The state is headed for Assembly election later this year.

While Chouhan is yet to take the political task spiritedly, Sarma was first to take the charge in Ranchi by meeting the BJP workers. Sarma held a presser in Ranchi also recently.

The BJP is aiming to wrest power in Jharkhand in the November election. The incumbent chief minister, Hemant Soren, is leading the ruling alliance consisting of the Congress.

Soren is banking on the tribal vote base consolidation in favour of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and other constituents of the Opposition bloc, the Indian National and Development and Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

The BJP had lost all the five reserved Lok Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand in the general elections held recently. The BJP is banking on Sarma’s political acumen to turn the electoral tide in favour of the BJP.
