Allegations in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh involving relatives of BJP leaders trigger debate over political impunity, law enforcement independence, and accountability

By RAVI SHANKER KAPOOR

New Delhi, April 23, 2026 There is nothing new about politicians and their associates behaving brazenly in public. However, recent incidents involving relatives of leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party have once again brought the issue of political impunity and accountability into sharp focus.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, a 28-year-old Aryaman Raghuvanshi, son of former state minister Sudhir Balyan, was arrested along with an associate, Surya Gupta, for allegedly harassing a woman and her daughter in the New Mandi area.

According to reports, the accused allegedly passed abusive and lewd remarks at the woman. When the daughter, in her 20s, attempted to record the incident, the duo reportedly became aggressive and even dared the victims to call the police. The situation escalated further when they allegedly entered the courtyard of the family’s house.

The confrontation ended only after family members intervened, leading to a scuffle. A case was registered at the New Mandi police station under sections related to assault and harassment of women. The accused were produced before a magistrate but were subsequently granted bail.

The incident has raised questions about the apparent lack of fear of law enforcement, with critics pointing to a pattern of perceived political protection.

A similar controversy has emerged in Madhya Pradesh, involving the son of BJP MLA Pritam Lodhi. The MLA’s son, Dinesh Lodhi, allegedly rammed his SUV into five individuals in Shivpuri.

Following the incident, local authorities initiated proceedings to cancel his driving licence. However, the matter escalated when Pritam Lodhi reportedly confronted a police officer over the action. In remarks that have drawn criticism, the MLA questioned whether directives were coming from top national leaders and reportedly issued threats, including mobilizing protests and targeting the officer personally.

The statements, widely circulated, have intensified scrutiny over the conduct of elected representatives and their families.

These incidents have reignited a broader political debate over the misuse of power and influence. Critics argue that such cases reflect a culture where individuals linked to political power act with a sense of impunity, undermining public trust in governance and law enforcement.

The BJP has often positioned itself as a “party with a difference,” emphasizing governance and accountability. However, repeated controversies involving leaders or their relatives risk denting that narrative and fueling opposition criticism.

While legal processes are underway in both cases, the developments highlight enduring concerns about law enforcement independence and the influence of political connections in India.

As investigations continue, the spotlight remains on whether due process will prevail and whether accountability mechanisms can function effectively, regardless of political affiliations.
