Locals Allege PLA Encroachment in Arunachal Pradesh, Seek Centre’s Intervention: Deccan Chronicle Report

New Delhi, June 28, 2026 — A civil society organisation in Arunachal Pradesh has alleged that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has expanded its presence into areas claimed by local communities in the Upper Subansiri district, prompting demands for urgent intervention by both the Centre and the state government.

According to a report published by Deccan Chronicle, the Nah Welfare Society (NWS), a leading civil society body representing the frontier Tagin community, has written to the deputy commissioner of Upper Subansiri district alleging that “several traditional grazing lands, forests and pilgrimage sites near the Taksing Circle are now under Chinese occupation.”

The report states that the society urged authorities to act before “your children know no border,” warning that local residents have been witnessing a gradual expansion of Chinese activities in the frontier region over the past decade.

Allegations of Occupation Near Taksing

Quoting the letter submitted by the NWS, Deccan Chronicle reported that the alleged “occupied areas” lie close to the Taksing headquarters and include culturally significant sites such as the Tseri pilgrimage area.

“The society reportedly identified locations including Oying (2445) in the Asphila area, Panjar (Chhujarta area), Marpa (Marnafe), Potrang (Iak) and Tungdintang (TG) as being under Chinese occupation,” reported Manoj Anand, veteran Northeast-based journalist of the publication.

According to the report, these locations were once used by local communities for grazing cattle, collecting forest produce and seasonal hunting.

Roads, Military Camps Allegedly Constructed

As reported by Deccan Chronicle, the society alleged that the PLA has constructed military camps, roads and bridges in these areas during the past five years. The letter reportedly claimed that the Chinese government has been “expanding its territory by occupying new and important places” along the border and described the pace of activity as “day-by-day.”

The report further said the society attached photographs of the alleged Chinese construction activities in the Taksing region along with its representation to district authorities.

According to Deccan Chronicle, the Nah Welfare Society urged the deputy commissioner to immediately take up the matter with both the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Union government to prevent further encroachment.

The society also reportedly reiterated its confidence in the Indian Army while expressing concern that the current level of deployment may not be sufficient to prevent incremental Chinese advances in remote border areas.

The Deccan Chronicle report noted that Upper Subansiri district authorities had not responded to the society’s representation at the time of publication.

The newspaper also quoted Nah Welfare Society chairman Keru Chader as saying the organisation would continue pressing governments to address what it described as an alarming situation along the frontier.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and there has been no official confirmation from the Indian government, the Indian Army or Chinese authorities regarding the claims. The area in question is said to be fertile for orange avocado farming.
