Trump Unleashes Tariff War on Key Trading Partners

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, February 3: US President Donald Trump on Sunday said that tariff is certainly coming for the European Union (EC). Trump said that the UK is temporarily out of the line of tariff.

To a question whether the US will tax the UK, Trump said: “We’re going to see what happens. It’ll happen. But we’re going to — it might. We’ll see how things work out. It might happen with them.”

But Trump was more assertive on slapping the EU with tariffs. “But it will definitely happen with the European Union, I can tell you that,” said Trump.

Canada Slaps Tariff Against US in Eye-For-Eye Trade War

With Trump assuming power in Washington, the EU is turning restive with the US over Trump’s reiteration of his threat to take over the control of Greenland. The EU leaders have held discussions with Denmark on ways to stand up to the threat of the US to take control of Greenland.

“Because they’ve really taken advantage of us. And, you know, we have over a $300 billion deficit,” Trump said, while reasoning on incoming tariffs against the EU.

The US slapped 25 per cent tariffs against Canada and Mexico yesterday. The US made an exception for energy goods from Canada for which the tariff was 10 per cent. The US also imposed 10 per cent tariffs on China.

“They don’t take our cars, they don’t take our farm products, they take almost nothing,” Trump fumed at the EU, adding: “And we take everything from them. Millions of cars, tremendous amounts of food and farm products.”

But Trump sought to make an exception for the UK for a temporary relief. “UK is out of line, but I’m sure that one — I think that one can be worked out,” added Trump.

The US President was harsh on the EU, saying: “But the European Union is – it’s an atrocity, what they’ve done.”

Trump’s key aide and billionaire Elon Musk has been raising narrative against the incumbent governments in several of the countries in Europe over their political ideologies. Trump is also amplifying the slogan of ‘Make Europe Great Again (MEGA)”.

Trump said that he has been in regular touch with UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer. “We’re getting along very well. We’ll see whether or not we can balance out our budget,” added Trump.

Canada, a close ally of the US, in a counter measure slapped 25 per cent tariffs on $150 billion goods imported from the US. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that tariffs on more American goods will soon be in place.
