CBS News fired veteran 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley on June 2, 2026, after he accused new Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” the show. It’s the latest rupture in a months-long war for the soul of American broadcast journalism.

New Delhi, June 3, 2026 — The firing of Scott Pelley from 60 Minutes on Tuesday was swift, brutal, and entirely predictable. It was also the loudest alarm yet that something irreversible may be happening to one of American journalism’s most storied institutions.

CBS News terminated Pelley on Tuesday, hours after a private meeting with executives — itself a follow-up to a staff confrontation the day before in which the veteran correspondent publicly confronted newly installed executive producer Nick Bilton. According to NBC News, which obtained a copy of the termination letter, Bilton wrote: “Your antipathy to the future of the show has come through loud and clear. And I have heard you.” The letter concluded: “your employment with CBS is terminated for cause effective immediately.”

What Pelley had said to trigger such a response was not subtle. At the June 1 staff meeting, he accused CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of destroying the program. According to NBC News, which obtained an audio recording of the meeting, Pelley told Bilton: “She is murdering 60 Minutes. She does not love this place.” He called Weiss’s appointment an act of institutional sabotage — someone “brought in to kill it,” he said, who was “doing exactly that.”

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Pelley also questioned Bilton’s qualifications to lead 60 Minutes — Bilton is a former tech journalist and documentary filmmaker with no linear television experience, and the fifth executive producer in the show’s history.

A Newsroom Already on Fire

Pelley’s dismissal did not arrive in a vacuum. It is the climax of months of escalating conflict since Weiss — founder of the conservative-leaning online outlet The Free Press — was named Editor-in-Chief of CBS News in October 2025 after Paramount Skydance acquired her company for $150 million. Variety reported that Weiss is the force behind Bilton’s appointment.

Just days before Pelley’s firing, CBS had already purged three other 60 Minutes veterans: correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi, along with executive producer Tanya Simon. Vega — the first Latina correspondent in the show’s history — did not go quietly. In a statement cited by Variety, she said: “In recent months, my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories… Let’s call this what it is: censorship, both imposed and self-driven. It is dangerous for the show and dangerous for democracy.”

As The Hollywood Reporter noted, Pelley’s exit leaves 60 Minutes with only three correspondents: Lesley Stahl, 84; Bill Whitaker, 74; and Jon Wertheim, 55.

The Weiss Question

Weiss arrived at CBS already polarizing. Fox News reported that internal critics fell into two camps — those who found her too ideologically incongruent with the newsroom, and veterans who bristled at her lack of broadcast experience. She pulled a finished 60 Minutes segment on the El Salvador prison CECOT last December before it was set to air — a decision that prompted a public outcry and accelerated distrust inside the building.

Weiss has insisted her mission is accountability journalism. In a memo to staffers cited by Fox News Digital, she wrote: “We want stories that break news, expose wrongdoing, widen public understanding, and force accountability from every institution and every center of power.”

Her critics, now mostly out the door, would argue that is precisely what 60 Minutes was already doing — until she arrived.
