Economic Growth Must be Humane: RSS Affiliate

New Delhi, February 3: Joining the debate around the long workhour, a Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) affiliate has slammed the corporate leaders for raising “exploitative” expectations from the workforce.
SN Subrahmanyan of the Larsen and Toubro (L&T) was in the storm of the controversy after telling employees of his company that they should work even on Sundays. A purported video of Subrahmanyan showed him asking how long employees can stare at their wives.
“The recent glorification of 70-90 hours workweeks by influential figures like Elon Musk, Narayana Murthy, and S. N. Subrahmanyan (L&T) raises serious concerns about worker well-being,” said Vrijesh Upadhyay of the Bharat Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), an RSS affiliate.

Subrahmanyan joined Murthy who had been advocating long work hours in his media interactions. Murthy claims in utterances that he worked long hours during his working career.
“While they argue that long hours drive success and national growth, this mindset dangerously overlooks the human cost of such excessive labour demands,” added the RSS functionary.
The long work hour debate again kicked off after the video of the &T CEO featured in the social media platform Reddit. During an internal interaction, he argued that employees should work on Sundays also.
“Even India’s Economic Survey has warned that long working hours negatively impact health, leading to burnout, chronic illnesses, and declining productivity over time,” added the RSS functionary.
He warned that “pushing workers beyond their limits does not create innovation—it creates exhaustion and inequality”.
“Economic growth must be sustainable and humane. True progress isn’t about overworking individuals but about creating efficient systems that maximize output without sacrificing well-being,” added Upadhyay.
The RSS functionary also stated that “productivity should empower workers, not exploit them”. This week he had also raised the issue of Glenmark Pharmaceutical laying off a large number of employees by scaring them with bouncers.
