New Delhi, October 2, 2026 — India’s women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold with a 1-0 victory over defending champions China on Friday, with Mizo forward Lalremsiami scoring the decisive goal and goalkeeper Savita Punia standing tall under pressure.
The victory, achieved on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, also secured India’s direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The final had everything expected from a contest against the reigning Asian champions and Paris Olympic silver medallists: an early goal, a penalty stroke, sustained Chinese pressure and a determined Indian defence.
Lalremsiami gave India the breakthrough in the 10th minute. Sakshi Rana picked out the forward inside the circle, and Lalremsiami turned before unleashing a fierce reverse-stick strike into the upper part of the net, leaving the Chinese goalkeeper with no chance.
The goal was particularly significant as it came during Lalremsiami’s 200th appearance for India.
China fought to find an equaliser and earned a penalty stroke, but Savita Punia produced a crucial save to preserve India’s lead. The Indian defence held firm through the remaining pressure, and the final whistle confirmed the historic 1-0 victory.
Lalremsiami: From Mizoram to Indian Hockey
Hockey has deep roots in Mizoram, where the game is locally known as “Vai vuak”. Many Mizo boys and girls grow up playing with hockey-like sticks made from bamboo and roots.
Lalremsiami, affectionately known as Remsiami, was born on March 30, 2000, in the College Veng locality of Kolasib town. She was the fifth of eight children of Lalthansanga and Lalzarmawii.
Her journey began at the age of 11, when senior Mizo hockey player T. Lallawmawmi introduced her to the game near Diakkawn Field.
Lalremsiami quickly distinguished herself through her speed, agility and talent. Her coach, Malawmi, believed she had the potential to become an outstanding hockey player.
After joining the India junior team, she trained alongside senior players in Bhopal and Bengaluru. Her hard work and performances during training attracted the coaches’ attention.
While still part of the junior team, she was invited to a senior-team meeting where the squad for a tour of the Netherlands was announced. To her astonishment, her name was included.
She initially struggled to believe she had been selected. Only after senior players repeatedly congratulated her did she realise that she had earned a place in the India senior team.
A Historic Moment for Mizoram
Lalremsiami’s match-winning strike has added another milestone to her journey from a small town in Mizoram to the highest level of international hockey. Her Olympic qualification with India also puts her on course to become the first Mizo woman to appear at the Olympics.
India’s gold medal was built on the combination of Lalremsiami’s decisive finishing, Savita Punia’s penalty-stroke save and the defence’s ability to withstand sustained Chinese pressure.
After 44 years of waiting, Indian women’s hockey finally had its Asian Games gold moment, with a Mizo forward delivering the goal that made history.
