CNN reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning to relocate from the US later this month to a private residence outside London, and that Archie and Lilibet have reportedly been enrolled in British schools for the coming term. King Charles only learned of the relocation plans on Sunday, per media reports, meaning the move was not discussed during the family’s visit to the UK in July.

Variety, citing People, reported the transition is expected to last for an “extended period” and begin within the coming weeks, while confirming the couple will keep their Montecito home even as they relocate.

Importantly, this is not a return to royal duties. Multiple outlets note the couple will remain private citizens. CNN reported the King has made clear there will be no change to the Duke and Duchess’s status as private individuals and non-working members of the royal family.

Reading Between the Lines

The optics here matter as much as the logistics. This is a family that left Britain in 2020 citing, among other things, tabloid intrusion and strained royal dynamics — and it’s returning not to a palace, but to a private residence, with no change to their non-working status. The move potentially lets the Sussexes reposition themselves geographically without appearing to reverse the substance of their 2020 exit.

The Hollywood side of the story is arguably just as telling. Variety said that the couple’s Netflix relationship describes a partnership under real strain, quoting an unnamed insider as saying “the mood in the building is ‘We’re done,’” even as the deal technically remains in place. Deadline reported that ratings for their cooking show With Love, Meghan fell sharply in the back half of 2025, with no third season currently planned. Put together with the relocation, it’s hard not to read this as a broader recalibration of the Sussex brand — pulling back from an entertainment strategy that hasn’t fully delivered, at the same time as pulling back geographically toward family.

None of this means a full reconciliation with the institution the couple left. Harry’s ongoing dispute over UK police protection remains unresolved, and nothing reported so far suggests Meghan or Harry are angling for a return to official royal life. But six years on, “non-working royal” apparently no longer has to mean “living an ocean away” — and that distinction itself may be the real headline.
