Trump Seeks Cushion to Chinese Dominance over Critical Minerals

New Delhi, January 12: ‘Art of the Surge’ released an over two-minute video of Donald Trump Jr travelling to Greenland this week. The luxurious Trump flight brought the son of the US President-elect Donald Trump to the Greenland capital Nuuk.
The junior Trump wheezed through the streets of Greenland to visit museums and tourist attractions. He along with his team walked into restaurants for meals.
The junior Trump in his short stays gathered video footages of the indigenous people of Greenland telling him that they all love the US. They sported the MAGA (Make America Great Again) caps.
While his son was filming the indigenous Inuit Greenland people, Donald Trump claimed in his press conference at Mar-a-Lago that “Denmark has no legal right over the island nation”. “Greenland can even declare independence from Denmark,” said Trump.
The US President-elect also said that “the people of Greenland love America”. “We need jobs,” one youth told junior Trump. The youth hailed from the indigenous community, which traces anthropological lineage with Thule tribe, which settled the island between the Arctic and the Atlantic Ocean around 1200 AD.
Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said that Greenland is not up for sales. Reports said that the US had tried twice in the last 150 years to buy Greenland.
The Hill in a report quoted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, reacting furiously at Trump rhetoric to take over Greenland. “It is a long-standing principle that borders must not be moved by force. The principle of the inviolability of borders applies to every country,” the media outlet quoted the German chancellor saying after his outreach to the European Union leaders this week in the wake of Trump’s threat to Greenland.
Almost 84 per cent of Greenland is covered with icesheet. The island is home to just 56,000 indigenous people. Denmark by a 2009 accord has granted the right to Greenland to declare independence through a referendum. Prime Minister of Greenland Múte Egede is spearheading a campaign for independence.
But western strategic analysts argue that Trump’s interest in Greenland has a link with his animosity with China. Greenland straddles at the shortest route between the North America and Europe. Al Jazeera in a report said that Trump with control over Greenland can disrupt the passage of the Russian and the Chinese ships through the maritime zone of Greenland.
Energy Monitor in a report two years ago gave accounts of the record level melting of the Greenland ice. The melting of the ice of at five times higher.

The climate event is whetting the eyes of electric vehicle manufacturers to tap into the wealth of the critical minerals in Greenland. Greenland is estimated to have 24 of the 35 critical minerals.
China currently controls exports of critical minerals. Last month, China unveiled stringent curbs on exports of critical minerals to the US to prevent their alleged use for military purposes.
But Greenland as a policy currently doesn’t mine its wealth of critical minerals. The island economy is based on fishing.
