Students interviewed by CBS News describe fear and anger over campus safety concerns, calling for answers from university authorities and reforms in consent education.

New Delhi, October 5, 2026 — Students at Cornell University have voiced anger, fear and frustration over campus safety concerns and the handling of a criminal case that has now been reopened, demanding transparency and accountability from university authorities.

In interviews with CBS News, students described concerns about women’s safety, the response to reported incidents and the need for stronger consent education on campus, including within Greek life.

One female student said she knew women who felt unsafe at Brat House, adding that her friends shared similar fears. “They’re just scared. We’re all scared,” she said, expressing anger at the university administration.

The student also criticised the handling of complaints by law enforcement, arguing that reports made by women were often ignored or not acted upon. She called for greater emphasis on educating men about consent and appropriate behaviour.

Male students interviewed by CBS News also expressed outrage over the incident. One described what happened as “disgusting” and said students wanted to challenge behaviour that made others feel unsafe.

Another student said the case raised disturbing questions about what could happen to other students and whether victims would receive justice without having to resort to a public media campaign to be heard.

The controversy has prompted calls for a clear account of events in 2024, including who was responsible for communicating information to the district attorney’s office and why the criminal case has now been reopened.

According to the student government representative interviewed by CBS News, the immediate demands are “transparency, accountability, and reform.”

Students want the university to establish, to the extent permitted by federal law, what happened, who was responsible for different decisions and whether information was properly communicated to prosecutors.

They have also questioned why the district attorney’s office did not initiate the criminal case earlier, if relevant information had been conveyed.

The student representative described the episode as a tragedy and a stain on the university, urging a review of campus consent policies, particularly for new students and members of Greek life.

The students’ demands underscore broader concerns about campus safety, institutional accountability and the handling of allegations involving sexual misconduct. Their call is for clearer procedures, responsible communication and preventive education to help ensure that students feel safe and that complaints receive appropriate attention.
