Municipal Election Results Crush Congress in Haryana, Gujarat
By Manish Anand
New Delhi, March 13: The Congress drew blank in Haryana mayoral elections. In Gujarat, the BJP won over 10 per cent municipal seats unopposed. In eight months since the Lok Sabha verdict, the Congress seems clueless at the BJP’s fiery comeback.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won nine of the 10 mayoral elections in Haryana. In Faridabad, the BJP candidate Parveen Joshi won by a biggest margin in the country for municipal elections. She decimated her Congress rival with over 3,16,000 votes.
A day before the Haryana municipal verdict came, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi demanded a discussion on voters’ list. He claimed that there is a “systematic manipulation of voters’ lists in states”.
After losing the Haryana Assembly elections, the Congress alleged “EVM manipulations”. The Opposition party claimed that the “EVMs reported 99% charge in seats where the BJP won”. A few weeks later, Gandhi and the Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge reportedly nudged the Hoodas – Bhupinder Singh Hooda (CM of Haryana from 2005 to 2014) and his son Deepender Hooda – for soul searching.
Haryana Municipal Election Results Boost BJP with Saffron Hue
After ruling for a decade not long ago, the Congress in Haryana is reduced to the status of a fringe player. Only eight months ago, the Congress stunned by winning five Lok Sabha seats in Haryana.
The Congress losses in Jammu, Maharashtra, and Delhi Assembly elections were on the scale of humiliations. The poll performances slotted the Congress to the political margins in the regions.
In Haryana, seven of the 10 winning mayoral candidates were women. They mostly came from the BJP. The Congress counts on the 25 per cent Jat support base in Haryana.
The BJP appears to have staged a coup against a patriarchal polity in Haryana. The Congress by allowing the Hoodas to run the show appears Corona-infected to not smell the changing flavour of Haryana politics.
But the Congress woes extend beyond Haryana. The principal Opposition party appears somehow not admitting that the poll victory comes with hard work done on the ground.
Also, the Congress leadership is not firm enough to bless a generational transition in state units. Kharge failed to persuade senior Hooda to gracefully retire from politics.
With decision deficits amid lack of foot soldiers on ground, the Congress seems caught in saffron storm. The Congress stays in denial of serious situations for the party.
