New Delhi, July 22: The Bharatiya Janata Party richly hailed the victory of the National Democratic Alliance candidate Droupadi Murmu in the Presidential election, asserting that the occasion marks the fulfilment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that his government is committed to the disadvantaged sections of the society.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, also congratulated President-elect Droupadi Murmu at her residence in New Delhi.

Sonowal presented the President-elect with an Assamese Gamosa and congratulated on behalf of all the people of North East India.

 

“I congratulate to Smt Droupadi Murmu ji on being elected as the 15th President of India. By becoming first tribal woman to be elected to the highest office of the country, we are fortunate to be part of this historic occasion,” said Sonowal.

The former CM of Assam also said that Droupadi Murmu’s election as the President of India fulfils the highest aspiration of Antyodaya.  “It represents the power of our democracy, of a nation, where every citizen can overcome socio-economic binds to rise. Murmu ji truly embodies the spirit of New India,” said Sonowal.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission also said that out of total 4796 electors who were eligible to vote, (771 MPs and 4025 MLAs), 4754 electors (763 MPs and 3991 MLAs) exercised their franchise.

The Returning Officer, who is also the Secretary General of Rajya Sabha, after the counting of votes was over, declared Droupadi Murmu elected as the next President of India.

Union Minister Arjun Munda also addressed a press conference at the BJP headquarters to hail the victory of Murmu, saying that the Modi government since 2014 has taken the development works among the tribal community on a largescale.
