METRO’s ‘Smart Kirana Program’ was conceived in 2018, transforming traditional small-format stores into customer-friendly, modern trade stores. This strategy boosted revenues and improved cash flows for kiranas, while also making METRO a true omnichannel player. The launch of an e-commerce app in April 2020 further revolutionized interactions between METRO and its customers, enabling kiranas to access a wide range of products with just a few clicks.
In addition to operational changes, Mediratta prioritized a cultural transformation within the organization. He introduced a meritocracy-based, performance-linked rewards program to foster a winning mindset and ownership, while also promoting diversity in leadership roles. The company’s strong work culture was evident during the global pandemic, as METRO prioritized employee health and safety, with no layoffs or salary cuts during this challenging period.
Mediratta’s ‘People First’ approach extended to millions of MSMEs, small traders, and kirana customers associated with METRO, who were equally vulnerable during the pandemic. His tireless efforts advocating for these groups to be recognized as frontline workers paid off, as METRO India was acknowledged as one of India’s Top 25 Best Companies to Work For in 2021 by the Great Place to Work (GPTW) Institute.
