We’ll Find Our Own Solutions: Cyril Ramaphosa

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, February 3: In a fast-paced unfolding of Donald Trump presidency upheavals, South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa has given a few lessons in history to his American counterpart. Ramaphosa bluntly has asked Trump to stay away from the internal affairs of South Africa.

“South Africa is a constitutional democracy that is deeply rooted in the rule of law, justice and equality. The South African government has not confiscated any land,” Ramaphosa posted a statement on X.

He was reacting to claims of Trump that a “certain class of the people in South Africa are being treated badly”. Trump in a post on his social media platform Truth Social said “I will be cutting off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed”.

Trump claimed afterwards that South Africa is doing some “terrible things, horrible things”. He told reporters that South Africa is “confiscating land” of certain class of the people.

He was referring to Expropriation Act adopted by the South African parliament. “It is not a confiscation instrument, but a constitutionally mandated legal process that ensures public access to land in an equitable and just manner as guided by the constitution,” said Ramaphosa.

He stated that “South Africa, like the United States of America and other countries, has always had expropriation laws that balance the need for public usage of land and the protection of rights of property owners.”

The South African President, however, clarified that his country receives no funding from the US except for PEPFAR Aid, which constitutes 17 per cent of South Africa’s HIVAids programme.

“South Africa is our land. South Africa belongs to all the people who live here in South Africa. It does not belong to Donald Trump,” Ramaphosa said in a speech, which was broadcast by the local television.

The video clip of his speech showed him further saying that “He can give his America. When I meet him, I will tell him. I’ll say you, Donald Trump, you are even worse because your forebears came to America. They found the native, the indigenous Americans. They wiped them out, they killed nearly all of them.”

Ramaphosa said: “We are living as a nation and black and white, we are going to find solutions for our land pressure. So, Donald Trump must leave us alone.”

He must leave us alone, added the South African President in the video clip. “When we were facing apartheid, when we were facing oppression, he was not here. He did not fight side by side with us and we were able on our own. Yes, with support of progressive forces in the world to resolve the apartheid question,” added Ramaphosa.

He further said that “as far as I recall, Donald Trump was not around the negotiating table when we negotiated the end of apartheid”. “So, stick around there in the White House. We will do our business here and we will find solutions for our problems,” Ramaphosa is heard saying in the video clip, which was recorded yesterday.

The South African President further sent the message to Trump, saying: “So stay out of our issues and we will not get involved in your issues in America. You will have your own problems. Leave us alone.”
