Commentator R. Narayanan says Vijay’s historic rise marks a political shift in Tamil Nadu but warns that early messaging and ceremonial controversies could hurt the new government’s image.

By R. NARAYANAN

New Delhi, May 11, 2026 — I am one of those who watched the Swearing-In-Ceremony of Mr. C Joseph Vijay as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

For the first time in over six decades, a party outside the Dravidian parties- DMK and AIADMK has taken control of the state. There is a massive shift in the voting pattern of the youth. The myth that votes can be purchased by Money and Muscle power exploded. In the coming years, this trend will be echoed in other States too and possibly at the Centre also.

Having said these, there are a few pitfalls to remember. 1. Mr. Vijay, after his swearing in, sent a strong message to the People. While doing so, he could have avoided about mentioning empty coffers. When he said that he is proposing to place a White Paper on State of Finance of the Government, he should not conclude that the State faces large sized debts. Either he was led or misled by the officers or website /Google. Either way, it is premature and avoidable.

Another point of controversy is Mr. Rahul’s presence in dais. It is beyond our comprehension how he chose to be seated in the dais. He is not CM designate nor Minister to be appointed. He has no locus standi to sit with Mr. Vijay. This has reduced his national stature. He is a very senior Leader, equivalent to Prime Minister (under Shadow Government concept). Of course, his intention was to send a message to BJP that the New Govt. supported by Congress is aiming to establish a secular state with social Justice. But this is not the correct fora. If the leaders of other supporting parties are also placed in the dais, it is a different issue.

Next comes the state song controversy. As per the orders of MHA, Vande Mataram full version should be played first, followed by National Anthem. The inclusion of State song is left to the discretion of the State. No doubt, it is an irregularity. But, fault lies not with the C.M designate but with the GAD of the State Govt. The Minister in Charge is the caretaker CM viz. Mr. Stalin. The vicarious responsibility rested on him.

Finally, Mr. Vijay should have set an example and courtesy of calling on Mr. Stalin and Mr. Palanisamy. Both of them, whether you like it or not, are seasoned leaders with lot of good will among the people and plenty of experience. This would have given Vijay lot of Good image.
