Tamil cinema and politics converged in Chennai as Vijay took oath as Chief Minister with major Kollywood personalities in attendance.

Chennai, May 10, 2026 — For decades, Tamil film stars attended these ceremonies as guests of honour. Today, one of them was the main event.
Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administering the oath of office — making history as the first leader outside the DMK and AIADMK formations to head the Tamil Nadu government since 1967. The stadium, already a space built for spectacle, did not disappoint.
The film industry showed up — and showed out.
The most talked-about celebrity presence was Trisha Krishnan, who arrived in characteristic style. In the front row, seats were reserved for Vijay’s parents — veteran filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and Shobha Chandrasekhar — and actor Trisha Krishnan and her mother were also allotted seats in the same row, drawing considerable attention from media and fans at the venue.
Before the ceremony began, Trisha was seen meeting and interacting warmly with Vijay’s mother Shobha. The interaction quickly became a talking point at the venue, with several attendees and television channels focusing on the moment. The two had shared screen space over two decades ago in Ghilli — one of Tamil cinema’s most beloved entertainers. That their reunion happened at a political swearing-in was not lost on anyone.
Tamil actor Sangeetha and singer Krish were also spotted arriving at the stadium for the ceremony.
The Kollywood connection ran deeper than the guest list. Among the nine ministers sworn into Vijay’s maiden cabinet was Aadhav Arjuna — himself an actor who had made the crossover into TVK politics, making him the rare figure to have appeared both on screen and now on the oath dais.
Tamil Nadu has always been the state where cinema and politics share a stage. Today, the curtain rose on a new act — and the front row of history had never looked quite like this.
