New Delhi, April 16: The first of the six G20 meetings slotted to Varanasi will kick off from Monday while Uttar Pradesh hogs international limelight following the global streaming of the edge of the seat raining of the bullets on gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed, which is making the violent ‘Godfather’ of Mario Puzo look dull for thrills.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is rolling out red-carpet welcome to the delegates of the Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the European Union. They were accorded rousing welcome in Varanasi.

The state government has prepared an exhaustive itinerary to showcase the tradition and heritage of Varanasi and also the Buddhist destination in Sarnath where Lord Buddha had given the first of his sermons.

“India’s oldest living city — Varanasi — is all set to host an array of G20 events for three days from Monday and showcase the city and Uttar Pradesh’s rich ancient and cultural heritage to the world. Representatives of 20 leading countries of the world and delegates from other partner countries will participate in the meeting of the Agriculture Working Group that is set to take place from April 17 to 19. To ensure a grand organisation of G20 events, the Yogi government has made complete arrangements,” said the UP government in a statement.

UP, the largest state by population, is seeking to be a pivot in India’s global footprints, as Varanasi alone will host six G20 meetings in the next five months of the Indian presidency of the multilateral grouping.

“A message will be given from the land of Goddess Annapurneshwari to promote nutritious foods, food security and environment-friendly farming to keep the whole world healthy,” the state government has said. India is pitching for diversification of agriculture to push for food security amid the shortage of wheat following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

While Adityanath is trending nationally after three assailants rained bullets from close range on Atiq Ahmed and his brother amid the presence of as many as 17 security personnel, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is drumming up the image of non-nonsense chief minister, who is vanquishing the Mafiosi, who had been running their empire for the last three decades in parts of the state.

By cracking down against the mafia dons, the chief minister is also seen to be sending out the message to the world that there will be no compromise on the law and order situation, which for several decades had scared away the investment in the state. UP is aiming to become a $1 trillion economy in the near future.
