Trump Broadens US Protectionism in Deepening Trade War

Washington, February 25: US President Donald Trump warned countries against barriers to tech companies. Trump also vowed to boost domestic sourcing of copper. The US President spoke of fresh ideas in his pursuit for trade gains.

“Our incredible United States economy and undeniable American spirit have enabled the creation of the greatest technology companies on Earth. Our digital economy is bigger than most of the world’s countries,” Trump said in a prelude to issuing warning to countries which create barriers for the US-based tech giants.

Trump’s latest target appears to be China, as Beijing is bracing for a tech trade war with the US. Chinese President Xi Jinping this month hosted a seminar with tech tycoons, including Jack Ma of Alibaba.

Trump also aims to step up trade war with Europe. Incidentally, European Union has imposed penalties on some of the US tech giants for violations of laws.

Russia-Ukraine War After 3-Yr Spurs US-Europe Disengagement

“The market cap of even one of our companies exceeds each European country. Instead of empowering their workers and creating opportunities, foreign governments have instead tried to tax, fine, and hinder American tech companies,” said Trump in a message posted on Truth Social.

Trump’s warning to Europe in particular came a day after he hosted French President Emanual Macron. The French President had snubbed Trump on claims that Europe’s funding of the Ukraine War was in the form of loan.

“Both friend and foe have been treating American tech companies harshly, as if our companies are their piggy bank. This will now end,” warned Trump. He added that “it is my objective to level the playing field and end these attacks. We are putting these countries on notice to end their unfair treatment of American companies, large and small.”

Trump and several of the European nations have been at loggerheads for last two months. German leaders have accused the US of interfering in the elections. Denmark has also accused the US of bullying over Greenland.

“Our Companies are the greatest investors in the world, and their investments will only go to where America is treated well. Our ingenuity, grit, drive and perseverance have built America. If these countries want to participate in the AI industrial revolution, it is time to choose sides with America, not against us,” added Trump.

It may be recalled that the AI Conference in Paris yielded no declaration due to the US and Europe not coming to agreement on key issues.
