Syria Falls to Türkiye-backed Rebels as Assad Regime Collapses
Syrian PM Offers Smooth Transfer of Power to Rebels

New Delhi, December 8: Türkiye-backed Jihadi Rebels reached at the doorsteps of the palace of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Videos on internet showed the rebels firing outside the palace. The Iranian embassy is also reportedly rushing to evacuate from Damascus.
The fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not immediately known. The Arabian commentators have stated that Syria has fallen to the Türkiye-backed Jihadi Rebels after they ran through provinces unopposed.
Charles Lister, who heads a Syrian think tank, said in a post on X: “Opposition fighters from Daraa are escorting Syria’s Prime Minister (Ghazi al-Jalali) out of his office and to the Four Seasons Hotel, in a move intended to symbolize the transfer of power and removal of the Assad regime.” He posted a video that showed Jalali being escorted out of his office by the armed rebels.
Later, Reuters quoted Jalali saying that “there should be free and fair elections in Syria”. He was also quoted saying that he’s ready for smooth transfer of power in Syria.
Two Jihadi rebels at the entrance of the palace per video can be seen shooting in the air while. The person in the video can be heard, saying: Thank God, we have reached the presidential palace’s entrance.”
Al Arabia in a news report said that the “people are entering the Iranian embassy in Damascus and removing a large picture hanging on the building that included Hezbollah’s secretary general Hassan Nasrallah”. Nasrallah had recently been killed in an Israeli bombing in Lebanon on the headquarters of the Hezbollah.
The fall of Syria to the Türkiye-backed Jihadi Rebels has come within a day of the US President-elect Donald Trump asserting that Washington should stay away from the affairs of Syria. Trump had reasoned that Russia’s loss of over 6,00,000 soldiers in the Ukraine War left the Assad regime without the military support against the rebels.
The Assad regime had been backed by Russia and Iran. In some quarters, the US is being accused of having scripted another regime change in Syria. Earlier, the US had been accused of regime change in Dhaka with the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led regime in Bangladesh after a violent protest movement.
“Sources told Al Arabiya that Iranian embassy employees are withdrawing from the embassy,” said Al Arabia in the news report. It added that “Assad is staring at most grave challenge to his power in decades with key cities falling to rebels”. The daily stated that Russian warplanes continue to bomb rebel positions.
The New York Times also in a report stated that “rebel forces advanced in Syria on Sunday amid fierce fighting”.
The White House in a statement last week had dismissed claims of links with the rebels. “The United States has nothing to do with this Offensive, which is led by Hay’at Tahir al-Sham (HTS), a Designated Terrorist Organization. We will continue to fully defend and protect U.S. Personnel and U.S. Military Positions, which remain essential to ensuring that ISIS can never again resurge in Syria,” added the White House in a statement.
