Same Sex
The Asian Age has called for wider consultations with the stakeholders in an Editorial to build a societal base for any decision of same sex marriage. The daily has stated that the Supreme Court, while staying away from revising the personal laws, is looking at the Special Marriage Act to explore if the law can cover not just man and woman in its scope.
The Pioneer too has stated that legalizing same sex marriage would be hasty, citing data from the US and elsewhere of minuscule number of such couple. The Noida-based daily has that the Centre’s views are reasonable which essentially argued for the legislatures to examine the issue.
Thirty countries have allowed same sex marriage, and several advanced countries are not in that list. The Supreme Court is seen to be in a hurry to reach a conclusion on the issue to give credence to the perception that India for the top court is essentially New Delhi and Mumbai. The apex court would be desired to exhibit similar urgency to address the rot in the justice administration which lets a large section of the poor to waste their life in jails for lacking means.
Regressive Reservation
The Telegraph has called the manipulation of the ruling parties with reservation system to tweak in favour of some sinister. The daily has faulted the reservation system in its Editorial, arguing that it has become just a tool for the vote bank politics of the political parties.
The Kolkata-based daily reminded that the principal basis for the reservation system, as enshrined in the Constitution for affirmative action, is backwardness and certainly not lack of representation and poverty. It also said that there should be a debate over the fundamental reasons behind reservation.
Politicians suffering from poverty mindset want to hold society hostage to caste and class competition, pitting one against the other. The creamy layer kept at Rs 8 lakh has already made the reservation system bogus. Timidity of the politicians to review the efficacy of reservation system also reveals that they have least concerns to address genuine backwardness of the certain sections of the society.
Mitra Moscow
The Hindu has said in its Editorial that Russia now is a source of 28 per cent of oil intake of India against 0.2 per cent before the Ukraine War. The daily also said that the bilateral trade surpassed the 2025 target of $25 billion to zoom to $45 billion even while the two countries are discussing free trade agreement.
The Chennai-based daily called for India to make its stand clear on the Ukraine War, while noting the silence over the circumstances surrounding the surge in the bilateral trade, which is excessively in favour of Russia.
Russia is currently sitting over a cash trove of rupees. India has every legitimate right to source cheaper oil. But Russian inability to import from India may stay a challenge. Moscow will need to push for Indian exports.
