Role play for Modi ministers in run up to no-confidence motion
By Manish Anand
New Delhi, August 4: Convention bars ministers from briefing media when Parliament is in session. But the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) believes in setting own conventions.
The ministers in the council of ministers headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had just wrapped up a month-long nationwide tour to talk up achievements of the ministries. That was supplemented by the BJP also unleashing several of its arms to drum up achievements of the Modi government.
By the time the outreach entered the last phase, the BJP leaders sensed boredom among the media persons. Grabbing headlines became challenging, and television found more juicy stuff to drive their TRP.
Both the Houses of Parliament are down with din. Union Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar wanted to give a marathon speech on the “historical visit” of Modi to the US. The Opposition found the speech bordering to propaganda, and thus cut him short. The minister delivered a fiery short speech before the television crew that the Opposition has no sense of the greatness of the Modi visit to the US.
The message was clear that the Modi government and the BJP were not finding the normalcy in both the Houses of Parliament to bombard the people with the greatness of the achievements of the Central dispensation. Also, the media was paying more attention to the Opposition than the achievements of the Modi government.
To break the boredom, the Modi government and the BJP appear to have hit on a new experiment to ask the ministers for a role play. So, Union Minister for Power R. K. Singh told the reporters at the National Media Centre that the Railways will rollout not less than 50 Vande Bharat trains this year.
Union Minister for Petroleum Hardeep Puri argued the case for India’s achievements in the space of the foreign affairs at the BJP headquarters. Gen. (Retd.) V. K. Singh, Minister of State for Road and Surface Transport, spoke of the achievements of the Ministry of Telecommunication. The subjects thus got new faces to talk about, while the context appears to be the no-confidence motion that the Lok Sabha is slated to take up on August 8.
The role play of the Ministers to talk up the achievements of the Modi government also seeks to convey that it’s a Team India efforts in the council of ministers. For that matters, a slew of Chintan Shivirs had been held to build the team efforts in the Central government.
