New Delhi, September 14: In a first in India or possibly in any part of the world, the Opposition block – Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) – on Thursday announced boycott of 14 television anchors.

Congress leader Pawan Khera in a post on X stated that the “INDIA media committee in a virtual meeting held this afternoon” took the decision to boycott the 14 anchors. The decision of the media committee announced boycott of shows and events hosted by the 14 anchors, who have been named in the handout posted on X, which is also being widely circulated.

Aditi Tyagi, Aman Chopra, Amish Devgan, Anand Narsimhan, Arnab Goswami, Ashok Srivastav, Chitra Tripathi, Gaurav Sawant, Navika Kumar, Prachi Parashar, Rubika Liaqat, Shiv Aroor, Sudhir Choudhary, and Sushant Sinha are the 14 television anchors who will be boycotted by the INDIA bloc.

It has also been learnt that the Opposition block may decide to boycott a few of the television channels where such anchors work after their monitoring. It has also emerged that the states were the constituents of the Opposition block are in power may also block advertisements to such channels.

It may be recalled that the Congress unofficially had in the past withdrawn from some of the television channels and stopped sending spokespersons for the debates. None of the press bodies such as Press Club of India, Press Council, Indian Women’s Press Corps have condemned the decision of the INDIA block to boycott the 14 anchors. While this is a first for any political grouping to name and shame anchors for their “compromised” credentials, media observers for long have been lamenting the falling standards of the television journalism in India. Even the higher judiciary had expressed concerns in the past at the toxicity in the studio.

It may also be recalled that a spokesperson’s religious comments made in a prime time debate had created diplomatic nightmare for India, with backlashes in several of the Islamic nations at a time when the then Vice President M. Venkaiaih Naidu was touring a group of nations in West Asia.
