Europe Speeds up Efforts for Leadership in Isolationist Trump Shadow

New Delhi, March 3: Europe has thrown its weight behind Ukraine. Bullied in Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy found solace in London. All happened in just two days.
French President Emannuel Macron sized up his US counterpart Donald Trump. He was the first European leader to witness Trump making a spectacle of rough diplomacy.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also in quick succession gained insight into the vile of Trump for Europe. Macron and Starmer joined European leaders on Sunday to assure the strength of continent for Ukraine.
“We have to put Ukraine in a position of strength, that it has the means to fortify and protect itself from the economic survival to the military resilience,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters after an unprecedented London meeting for Ukraine.
Kaja Kallas had given aways clues of thoughts in the minds of the leaders of Europe in a post on X on day Trump and his deputy JD Vance insulted Zelenskyy. Kallas is the European Union Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security.
“Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge,” Kallas wrote in a post on X.
Europe’s urgency for wresting global leadership was revealed in Leyen leading an extraordinary delegation of almost all the EU commissioner to New Delhi last week. Before meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the EU Commissioner said that the Free Trade Agreement is happening this year. India-FTA talks are being held for over 15 years.
Trump is championing fossil fuel to lay path to ‘Golden Age of the US’. Europe is transitioning to clean energy. India-EU joint statement detailed roadmap for partnership for futuristic technologies.
Statement of Kallas invited a close scrutiny by former Prime Minister of Kyrgyz Republic Djoomart Otorbaev. “This statement obviously means that Europeans are no longer recognizing the old leader of the free world,” said Otorbaev in a long post on LinkedIn.
“It is no secret that after World War II, the American president was considered the leader a priori.” He wondered, if “Europeans are refusing to recognize Donald Trump as the leader of the free world, or that they are no longer considering the US to be part of the free world”.
Before snubbing Zelenskyy, Starmer, and Macron, Trump had already sent Europe to strategy table. Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had gone on an electrifying tour of European capitals.
On a phone call, Danish Prime Minister had snubbed Trump for his rhetoric to wrest control of Greenland. While Germany and France asserted support to Denmark, the UK too became convinced to rediscover the bond with the EU.
“The leaders reflected on the EU Council dinner last night, and the Prime Minister said he was pleased to have been able to set out his vision for a closer UK and EU relationship that would benefit all sides through greater growth and enhanced defence and security cooperation,” the UK government said in a statement issued after the meeting of Starmer with Danish Prime Minister.
Both agreed on the need to strengthen European defence capabilities, including through NATO, added the statement of the UK government. It spotlighted “security in the High North and Arctic region and also the role Denmark was playing”.
Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, lies on the shortest route from the US to Europe. Trump’s common interest in Greenland and Ukraine lies in his urgency to secure critical minerals for the US. China in December last year banned bulk of critical minerals’ exports to the US.
Europe is also alarmed at rise of China in the Central Asia. “China has heavily entered Central Asia. Basically, the EU, if before it had as a danger to contain only Russia, now finds dealing with the much dangerously devious Chinese danger as well,” said Gabriele Iuvinale, a senior China Fellow at Jose Parejo & Associates.
