New Delhi, January 28: Europe is closing ranks to defend Greenland from threats of the US President Donald Trump. France on Tuesday hinted that European military deployment in Greenland could be a possibility.
French Foreign Affairs minister Jean-Noël Barrot told Sud Radio that European army may be deployed in Greenland. “If our security interests are at risk…,” Barrot told the Sud Radio in an indication that France may take initiative to defend Greenland.
Trump in a press conference ahead of his oath as the 47th President of the US had spoken of taking over Greenland. Denmark has strongly reacted to Trump’s menacing assertions in the recent days.

Denmark has committed increased defence spendings to boost the defence of Greenland. The Arctic Ocean Island is a Denmark territory.
“Barrot told Sud Radio discussions were being held with Denmark on the deployment of EU troops in case a security risk arises he said, but ruled out any immediate action,” reported EURACTIV on Tuesday.
Barrot, however, said in the radio interview that Denmark has not yet sought the military support. “At this point, it is not Denmark’s wish,” he was quoted having said in the radio interview.
Greenland is 84 per cent covered by ice sheet. Ahead of oath taking ceremony of the new US President, Donald Trump Jr had travelled to Greenland to claim that the locals wanted to join America.
Denmark has announced addition of three new navy vessels in a bid to boost defence of Greenland. The US apparently is eying Greenland for its rich reserves of critical minerals.
There is a ban in Greenland on mining of minerals. Greenland’s mainstay of the economy is fishing.
“|Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen held a spate of bilateral meetings on Tuesday,” reported the French news portal. Frederiksen held bilateral with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin. She also met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
The Danish Prime Minister also called on NATO chief Mark Rutte. She has been on an overdrive to bring the European leaders on board against Trump’s threats.
Rutte has also recently been at the loggerheads with Trump’s unilateral assertions on the Russia-Ukraine War. He had warned that a ceasefire forced on Ukraine may have security consequences.
The French foreign minister has been quoted having said that the Arctic had become a new field of conflict with risk of foreign interference.
