Congress Goes Soul Searching in Belagavi to Gain Ambedkar Ace
Congress Extended CWC in Belagavi to Hammer Agenda for Politics
By Manish Anand
New Delhi, December 26: The Congress at 3 PM on Thursday will begin commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi presiding over the sole session of the party a century ago in Belagavi. The extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) session will seek brainstorming of ideas for politics.
The Congress has added ‘Jai Bhim’ to ‘Jai Bapu’ in the run up to the Belagavi session. A day ahead of the Belagavi session, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also went in a huddle with alliance partners in the National democratic Alliance (NDA) for a combative strategy on the Amedkar issue. The Congress is leading the Opposition charge on the NDA government at the Centre for the alleged insult of B R Ambedkar by Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah while replying to a discussion on 75 years of the adoption of the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha.
The Congress apparently is sniffing opportunity to rediscover touch with the Dalit constituency. “We are going to give an agenda. We are going to discuss the issues on all fronts,” DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka told reporters while overseeing the preparations for the grand opening of the Belagavi session of the Congress.
The Congress bid to cut into the OBC constituency slice with the caste census poll plank so far has been muted in electoral outcome. The Congress is evidently struggling to replicate the success in southern parts of the country in northern states.
The Congress bid now to aggressively reach out to Dalit vote base with Ambedkar poll plank seems at centre stage of the Belagavi deliberations. “Walking in Mahatma Gandhi’s footsteps, we will be holding a Nava Satyagraha to reiterate our commitment to his principles, as well as the Constitution and the path shown to us by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. We will also be holding a Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Mega Rally along with the extended CWC Meeting over the course of the next two days,” said the Congress national general secretary KC Venugopal.
The Congress is holding the mega event in the shadow of re-emergence of questions against the leadership of leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The party leaders have taken a curious note of both the sibling, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, speaking on Constitution discussion with others further pushed to margins.
Also, the Congress leaders have been stunned at scale of the rout in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Congress could win just 16 Assembly seats in Maharashtra. Also, the Congress lost 65 of the 75 Assembly seats where the party was in a direct contest with the BJP in Maharashtra.
