Han Zheng to Attend Trump Unveiling Amid Hectic US-China Engagement

New Delhi, January 17: Chinese President Xi Jinping is sending his deputy Han Zheng to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump presidency on Monday. The outgoing Joe Biden administration has held hectic parleys with senior officials in China amid the transition of the government in Washington.
“At US invitation, President Xi Jinping’s special representative, Vice President Han Zheng, will attend President Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony,” said Chenese ambassador in the US, Xie Feng, in a post on X.
Trump has followed up on his anti-China rhetoric since the electioneering for the November elections to his post-poll media briefings. Top Trump nominated officials in their Senate hearings for confirmation have also been invoking China threat as their dominant worldviews.
“China follows the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation in viewing and growing its relationship with the US. We stand ready to work with the new US government to enhance dialogue and communication,” added Xie. The Chinese ambassador also said that the two countries will work “to properly manage differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, jointly pursue a stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship, and find the right way for the two countries to get along with each other”.
India’s External Affairs Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar will be attending the inauguration of the Trump presidency. Some of heads of the states have met Trump after his victory in the November elections.
Xie in an update stated that the State Councilor and Director of the China National Narcotic Control Committee Wang Xiaohong has held discussions through video spoke via video link with Rahul Gupta, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. “Under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China-US cooperation on drug control has made positive progress in 2024. The two sides should adhere to the correct strategic perception, treat each other as equals…,” Wang told Gupta.

The outgoing Joe Biden administration officials have held exchanges with their Chinese counterparts as a part of the transition efforts. The US ambassador Nicholas Burn will also be returning back after his replacement is announced for Beijing hand in the Trump administration.
Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng has also discussions with the US Secretary of Treasury Jenet Yellen. “Two lead persons for China-US economic and trade affairs, had a candid, in-depth and constructive video call. The two sides reviewed bilateral economic exchanges and cooperation in recent years, and spoke highly of the important role of China-US economic and financial working groups and other dialogue mechanisms,” said Xie in his post on X.
