US Sanctions Top Hong Kong Officials for Rights Abuses

By TRH News Desk

New Delhi, April 1: China on Tuesday slammed the US sanctions on senior officials of Hong Kong. The US sanctioned Hong Kong police commissioner and top justice department official for rights abuses.

“This so-called U.S. ‘Hong Kong Policy Act Report’ is composed of falsehoods and disinformation. It is a vicious attack on China’s One Country, Two Systems, the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the HKSAR and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China said on Tuesday.

China alleged that the “report seeks to smear Hong Kong’s democracy, rule of law, exercise of freedoms, and human rights conditions”. “It interferes in Hong Kong’s handling of national security cases and mischaracterizes the extraterritorial application of the law,” alleged the Foreign Affairs Ministry of China.

China claimed that the “announced U.S. unilateral sanctions on officials representing the central government in Hong Kong and officials of Hong Kong SAR government are groundless and unjustified. The sanctions and the report constitute grave interference in China’s internal affairs, including Hong Kong affairs.” China firmly rejects and strongly condemns this, it added.

The US Imposed sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials over human rights abuses. The US Department of State announced sanctions against six senior Chinese and Hong Kong officials.

These sanctions respond to ongoing political repression in Hong Kong and restrictions on access to Tibet, explained the US Department of State.

Hong Kong’s Justice Secretary Paul Lam and Police Commissioner Raymond Siu are on the list of sanctioned officials. The sanctions involve asset freezes and prohibit these officials from utilizing the US banking system.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted the US’s commitment to human rights. He stated that the actions are aimed at holding accountable those responsible for undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy.

The sanctions target officials involved in Hong Kong’s national security law. This law has allegedly been used to suppress pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.

The report accused the sanctioned officials of engaging in “transnational repression that intimidates, silences, and harasses pro-democracy activists”. Rubio before becoming the US Secretary of the State had been a vocal critic of human rights violations by China in Hong Kong and Tibet.

Rubio’s last conversation over phone with China’s Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi had been explosive. Wang had warned Rubio to “mind his ways”.
