China to Work to Practice True Multilateralism: Wang Yi

By TRH News Desk

New Delhi, March 24: China on Monday asserted that Beijing would seek strengthening of the United Nations. China’s Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi said that the goal is to achieve true multilateralism.

Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister made his welcome remarks at an international symposium themed ‘Strengthen the Role of the United Nations and Promote Multilateralism’. The symposium is being hosted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The symposium assumes significance amid China’s efforts to gains geopolitical heft amid unilateralism of US President Donald Trump. Also, the United Nations is mostly seen irrelevant as it failed to play any significant role in geopolitical hotspots.

“In today’s world, changes unseen in a century are accelerating, geopolitical conflicts continue unabated, various challenges keep emerging, and factors of instability and uncertainty are clearly on the rise,” said Wang at the symposium.

He said that “we will bring stability to a changing and turbulent world, inject positive energy in building a more just and equitable global governance system”. The Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister also stated that Beijing will “work toward the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind and embrace an even brighter future”.

China’s emphasis on strengthening the UN also comes at a time when the US is working directly with Russia to broker peace in Ukraine. Also, the UN had been missing in action for almost one and a half years long Israel and Hamas conflict. Also, the chief of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus narrowly escaped death when Israel bombed an airport in Yemen.

“At the U.N. Summit of the Future successfully convened in September 2024, countries committed themselves in the outcome document to taking action on transforming global governance in various areas,” Wang said.

He stated that the effort “reflects the common aspiration of the international community for supporting and promoting multilateralism, strengthening the role of the U.N. and improving global governance”.

Beijing is amplifying multilateralism template at a time when Trump renewed “decoupling China” by slapping tariff against the Communist ruled country. Also, geopolitical experts argue that Trump is seeking to wean away Russian President Vladimir Putin from the influence of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I believe this symposium will further boost the efforts to deliver on the summit outcome and forge new consensus on transforming and improving global governance,” said the Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister.

He stated that “this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations, a key moment in the history of humanity. The international community hopes to see all countries work in solidarity and coordination to uphold what is right, steer the direction of our era, defend fairness and justice, safeguard world peace and stability, and promote global development and prosperity.”
