US, Canada Trade War Worsens in Trump Shadow

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, February 2: The US-led trade war has begun inviting backlash, as Canada slapped 25 per cent tariff on American imports. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced tariffs on US imports within hours of Trump signing the restrictive trade measures.

“Tonight, I am announcing Canada will be responding to the U.S. trade action with 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion worth of American goods,” Trudeau announced.

The Canadian Prime Minister stated that the tariff measures by his country “will include immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion worth of American products in 21 days’ time”.

Trudeau reasoned that 21 days’ time is being given for tariffs on ₹125 billion to “allow Canadian companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives”.

Mexico to Trump: Nothing by Force; Everything by Reason & Right

The US announced 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico while slapping 10 per cent tariff against China. The US has made exceptions for the energy goods of Canada for which the tariff will be 10 per cent.

Earlier, the British Columbia Premier David Eby announced buying liquor from US red states. Crown corps (eg BC Hydro, ICBC, health authorities) has been directed to immediately stop buying American goods. The Canadian province is supporting targeted set of national tariffs against US products, said a statement.

“Premier David Eby is announcing immediate counter-measures to stand up for B.C.’s workers and businesses after the United States announced incoming 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods and 10 per cent tariffs on energy,” said a statement from the office of the premier.

Eby stated that “President Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs are a complete betrayal of the historic bond between our countries and a declaration of economic war against a trusted ally.”

Mexico has also responded by announcing activation of ‘Plan B’ against the imposition of tariff. Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum slammed the US for imposing 25 per cent tariff.

“We categorically reject the White House’s slander against the Mexican government of having alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of intervention in our territory,” she stated in a statement.

Meanwhile, the White House in a statement said that “President Trump is implementing a 25 per cent tariff to be paid for by Mexican producers until Mexico cooperates with the U.S. in the fight against drugs. Mexican cartels are the world’s leading traffickers of fentanyl, meth, and other drugs”.
