Poet Turned Politician Storms Delhi Elections for anti-AAP Groundswell
By Manish Anand
New Delhi, February 6: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders are unfazed at pollsters predicting their ousters from power in Delhi. They have hit gyms to relax after gruelling electioneering.
The AAP leaders are exuding confidence that ‘Brand Arvind Kejriwal’ will come triumphant in Delhi for fourth occasion in a row. If their hopes come true, the AAP national convenor will take coveted place with the likes of Naveen Patnaik and Narendra Modi for continuous strings of victory.
But the AAP ran into the wall raised by Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah to finally deal with Kejriwal and his lieutenants. Shah is yet to win Delhi for ‘Brand Modi’.
The BJP’s way of micro-managing polls had in past gave disappointing outcomes. The AAP stayed far stronger to the blows of the BJP.
Tactical Congress Keeps AAP & BJP Guessing in Delhi Elections
But young Imran Pratapgarhi, the Rajya Sabha MP of the Congress, began giving powerful blows to the almost impregnable Delhi wall of the AAP. His father wanted him to become an engineer, but Pratapgarhi’s heart beat for poetry.
While pursuing Master of Arts in Hindi from Allahabad University in Uttar Pradesh, Pratapgarhi announced his arrivals in ‘Kavi Sammelan’. His melodious rendition of poetry and Nazm turned him into a sensation.
Signing off the electioneering, Pratapgarhi shared a couplet of poet Dr Suresh — इस नगर हैं – उस नगर हैं पॉंव में बॉंधे सफ़र हैं हैं थके हारे – नींद के मारे हम तो ठहरे यार बंजारे (Hails from this town, to that town, travel binds feet, sleep strikes but we’re nomads). “Today the campaigning for Delhi elections ended. Due to continuous meetings for the last one week, my entire routine of waking and sleeping got disturbed. We hope that in Delhi elections the old voters of Congress will definitely return to Congress,” Pratapgarhi signed off from Delhi poll scene.
For past over month, his electioneering was the storm that stirred the poll tea cup of Kejriwal. “When the riots took place and when you sat on street in protest, Kejriwal and his party were not with you,” Pratapgarhi stirred the Muslims to bolt the AAP camp.
He shored up morale of the Congress candidates with his war cries against the AAP and the BJP, with messaging served through couplets and nazm in chaste Hindustani. “The stick of the almighty makes no noise, but justice is served. In lifetime of Manmohan Singh, the men who accused him of corruption went to jail on charges of graft,” Pratapgarhi said in almost all his election meetings to scorch the honesty plank of Kejriwal.
The AAP convenor turned the Delhi Assembly elections into a referendum on his claim of being a ‘kattar imandar (incorruptible)’. While the top leadership of the Congress waited till the last act in the electioneering to plunge with full force, Pratapgarhi had already run the full stead to bring back the people to the election meetings of the Congress.
Pulling spontaneous crowds for his electioneering gust, Pratapgarhi served memory tonics to the people to spotlight late Sheila Dikshit and even Manmohan Singh. By the time the young poet from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh signed off Delhi turf, he had forced open the electoral citadel of the AAP that allowed the BJP foot soldiers to march inside with full force.
