Intense Speculations Build up for Next BJP President

By Amit Kumar

New Delhi, March 2: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun the process for electing next party president. Incumbent BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda is currently holding out on an extended term in the absence of internal elections within the party.

Intense speculations are doing the rounds of political corridors on the BJP’s next president. “The next BJP president will shoulder the task of leading the party till the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Also, the next BJP president may have to preside over some of the big decisions in his tenure,” said a senior BJP functionary.

The BJP has asked the state units of the party to fast-track elections. “The state units of the BJP have been told to wrap up elections by March 25. The elections in the state units were moving at quite slow pace,” said another senior BJP functionary.

Half the state units need to complete the elections to choose members of the national executive of the BJP. “By all indications, there will be a new BJP president latest by the first week of April,” said another senior BJP functionary. Nadda during Lok Sabha elections faced stress with the RSS.

A section of the media has also speculated that the BJP could elect the next president of the party by March 15. But the status of the ongoing elections in the state units suggest likelihood of delay in electing the next president of the BJP, added the party functionary.

Modi-Shah Take ‘Project Ending Satraps’ Full Hog in BJP

Nadda has already served two full terms. He is currently on extension. Nadda had assumed charge in 2019 of the BJP president after almost six months. While his predecessor Amit Shah had joined the Union Cabinet in 2019, Nadda also became a Minister after the 2024 elections.

“Hectic parleys are underway among senior functionaries of the BJP who actually make decisions over the elections of the party president. The top brass of the party is weighing several factors to decide the name of the next BJP president,” said the BJP functionary.

The BJP, however, maintains that the party elects the president in a democratic way. However, the BJP observers opine that the president of the party is selected by the top brass and the decision is endorsed by the national executive to give a semblance of democratically elected post.

Political pundits are speculating on names of the next BJP president on caste and region factors. The BJP also had launched a membership drive on the lines of the mandate before holding the elections.
