New Delhi, January 7: Reports said that the death toll has sharply risen to 95 in Tibet following massive earthquakes with epicentre near Mount Everest. Reports also said that several people remain trapped after a number of buildings collapsed in Tibet.
The 7.1 Richter scale earthquake sent tremors across South Asia. Nepal and India also felt strong tremors on Tuesday morning. There are no reports of loss of human lives in India from the earthquake.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV in a report quoted local officials, saying that the death toll has risen to 95. The broadcaster also said that over 160 people have been injured. The officials were also quoted, saying that the rescue personnel are trying to save people stuck in debris of collapsed buildings.

Reports earlier had said that a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Tibet’s Shigatse city at 9:05 am on Tuesday. Earlier, the death toll was stated at 53 deaths.
Social media is now full of viral videos showing footage of damaged buildings and crumbled shop fronts in the larger towns of Shigatse and Lhatse in Tibet. Reports also stated that several buildings collapsed while the region was rocked by five aftershocks.
Chinse state media, Global Times, quoted the Xizang (Tibet) Military Command, saying that the General Hospital affiliated to the Command dispatched 50 medical personnel to the earthquake-hit Shigatse. “The second batch of rescue forces from the Shigatse military sub-command, totalling over 680 personnel, has been deployed in Dingri, Lazi, and Sakya for rescue efforts in nearby towns and villages,” said Global Times in its report.
An image of the Chinese military personnel rescuing a child from the debris has gone viral on the social media platforms. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Shigatse in Tingri region, said seismologists.
Shigatse has an estimated population of 800,000. The region is known for its seismic activity. The last such earthquake had shaken up the region five years ago. The earthquake risk for the region is also on account of the collision of the India and Eurasia tectonic plates.
BBC in a report said that “tremors were also felt across the border in Nepal, causing residents in Kathmandu to evacuate their homes”. The broadcaster said that authorities were conducting search and rescue efforts to locate survivors and assess the full extent of the damage.
