Zohran Mamdani Poised to Secure Democratic Nomination for NYC Mayor

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, June 25, 2025 – In a stunning upset, 33-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is on track to clinch the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor. He is all set to topple former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a fiercely contested primary.

With 90% of votes counted in the June 24, 2025, Democratic primary, Mamdani holds a commanding lead, His chances have been bolstered by cross-endorsements from fellow progressive candidates Brad Lander and Michael Blake in New York’s ranked-choice voting system, as reported by POLITICO and The Guardian.

A POLITICO post on X declared, “Zohran Mamdani is on track to become Dems’ candidate for NYC mayor — toppling Andrew Cuomo’s comeback dreams,” noting that Cuomo has conceded and congratulated Mamdani.

“In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City,” he said in a post on X on Wednesday.

Mamdani’s meteoric rise from a little-known Queens assemblyman to the Democratic frontrunner has been led by a dynamic campaign emphasizing affordability and social justice. His platform, which includes freezing rents for rent-stabilized apartments, making city buses free, establishing city-owned grocery stores, and building 200,000 affordable housing units, has resonated with younger voters and progressive strongholds, particularly in Brooklyn and Queens, according to The New York Times and Bloomberg.

The Guardian reported that Mamdani’s social media savvy, with nearly a million followers on Instagram and TikTok, has outshone rivals, with viral videos explaining policies like ranked-choice voting in Hindi and Urdu, appealing to South Asian communities.

Cuomo, 67, who led polls earlier with endorsements from establishment figures like Michael Bloomberg and Bill Clinton, saw his lead erode as Mamdani’s grassroots momentum surged, amplified by endorsements from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. The Atlantic noted that Mamdani’s campaign, marked by “high-quality video production” and an army of volunteers knocking on 100,000 doors weekly, has redefined political engagement, contrasting with Cuomo’s reliance on traditional union support and billionaire-backed Super PACs.

A POLITICO poll conducted June 6-7 showed Mamdani leading Cuomo 35% to 31%, a shift confirmed by a later Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey projecting Mamdani ahead 52% to 48% in the final ranked-choice round. However, Mamdani’s campaign has not been without controversy. His outspoken criticism of Israel, including calling the Gaza war a “genocide” and defending the slogan “globalize the intifada,” drew backlash from Jewish organizations and figures like Congressman Ritchie Torres, who criticized his pro-Palestine stance, per NBC News.

Mamdani, the son of Indian-Ugandan filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani, tearfully addressed the resulting hate, including death threats, stating, “It pains me to be called an antisemite.” Despite this, his multi-racial coalition, including strong support from white, Asian, and nearly a third of Hispanic voters, has held firm, though The Atlantic noted weaker traction among Black and low-income voters compared to Cuomo.

Mamdani’s apparent victory, as TIME described, is a “seismic moment” for the Democratic Party, suggesting an insurgent mood in the Trump era. His rise challenges the party’s establishment, which backed Cuomo despite his 2021 resignation amid sexual harassment allegations. The Guardian highlighted that Mamdani’s success offers a “blueprint” for progressives globally, marrying economic justice with moral clarity to counter right-wing populism. If elected, Mamdani would be New York’s first Muslim, South Asian, and millennial mayor, a historic shift in a city with over half a million Muslims and one of the largest Jewish populations outside Israel.
