Kiev, February 13: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hardened his positions on peace talk with Russia on Thursday. Zelenskyy set a number of conditions for talks, including taking Europe on board in negotiations.
The Ukrainian President spoke to Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk on Thursday. He briefed the Polish Prime Minister on talk with US President Donald Trump.
“I spoke with Polish Prime Minister. We discussed the conditions needed for a lasting and real peace in Ukraine and agreed that no negotiations with Putin can begin without a united position from Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S,” said Zelenskyy in a post on the social media platform X.
His remarks came within hours of Kremlin clarifying that no meetings have been scheduled for negotiations. Trump yesterday spoke first to Russian President Vladimir Putin and afterwards with Zelenskyy. Trump announced a meeting in Munich, Germany for negotiations on peace talks.
“I informed the Prime Minister about my conversation with President Trump, and we discussed key messages and the need to coordinate the positions of all Europeans to achieve successful outcomes for the whole of Europe,” added Zelenskyy.
The US President had made unilateral announcement on peace negotiations. He had even announced the US team led by Vice President JD Vance to lead the negotiation at the Munich meeting on Friday.
“I emphasized that Ukraine must negotiate from a position of strength, with strong and reliable security guarantees, and that NATO membership would be the most cost-effective for partners,” said Zelenskyy.
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press briefing denied that Trump and Putin have agreed to meet in Saudi Arabia any time soon. The Ministry said that Trump spoke to the Russian President on his plan to end the Ukraine War.
The Ukrainian President reiterated that “another key guarantee is serious investment in Ukraine’s defence industry. I also warned world leaders against trusting Putin’s claims of readiness to end the war.”
The statement of Zelenskyy has come as a dampener to the claims made by Trump in his social media posts on Truth Social that both Russia and Ukraine are in agreement on his roadmap to end the three-year-old war.
