On Trump Tariff Trail, China Seeks Shared Future with Neighbours

New Delhi, April 10, 2025: Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of fostering a “community with a shared future” with neighbouring countries. Xi Presided over a Central Conference on work related to neighbouring countries between April 8-10.
China observers termed the Central Conference on Work Related to Neighbouring Countries pivotal. The conference was held in Beijing from April 8 to 9.
Xi, also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered a keynote address that outlined China’s vision for regional cooperation and stability. The conference took place amid escalating trade war between China and the US. The US imposed a cumulative tariff of 125 per cent on China.
“At a central conference on work related to neighboring countries held in Beijing from Apr. 8 to 9, President Xi Jinping called for building a community with a shared future with neighboring countries and striving to open new ground for China’s neighbourhood work,” Xie Feng, China’s ambassador in the US, quoted Xi saying at the conference.
The conference was attended by top CPC leaders. Members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, and Li Xi attended the conference. Chinese Vice President Han Zheng also attended the conference.
The conference focussed on reviewing China’s neighbourhood diplomacy and setting strategic goals for the future. Xi spoke of “historic achievements in China’s relations with its neighbours since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012”.
Incidentally, the time span mentioned by Chinese President coincides with Xi’s Presidency. Xi credited the principles of “amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness” for creating “the best regional relationships in modern times”.
The conference took place at a time when China-US trade war is gaining strength. China also released a white paper – China’s Position on Some Issues Concerning China-U.S. Economic and Trade Relations.
The White Paper sought to clarify the facts about China-US economic and trade relations, and its official stance on key issues. China has told the European Union in a contact yesterday that globalisation is inevitable for shared prosperity for the world.
“All human beings live in the same global village and no country can thrive in isolation. Protectionism leads nowhere, and only openness and cooperation represent the right path for mankind.” Chinese Premier Li Qiang said in a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen in a phone conversation.
