Nation Pays Heavy Price if Tolerance of Farmer Tested: Jagdeep Dhankar

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, December 3: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar expressed anguish at the government for not holding dialogue with agitating farmers. Dhankar warned that “nation pays heavy price when it tests patience of farmers”.

“I don’t understand why there is no dialogue with the farmer. We are not even giving the farmer his due, instead of rewarding him. It is a big misconception to assess the farmers’ movement in a limited way,” said Dhankar at a function where Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan was also present.

Why is farmers at distress, asked Dhankar, while cautioning that the cultivators be not taken lightly. “It just means that our policy making is not on the right track,” added Dhankar.

The Vice President said that he was distressed to see the farmers agitating to get their rightful dues. “We cannot have the ideology that the farmer will get tired on his own,” warned Dhankar.

He asked the agriculture minister why promises made to the farmers have not been fulfilled. “When any government makes a promise, and that promise is linked to the farmer, then we should leave no stone unturned in fulfilling it,” said Dhankar, adding that the “the farmer is still yearning for a fair price for his produce”.

“If any nation tries to test the tolerance of the farmer, it will have to pay a very big price,” warned Dhankar. His remarks came amid plan of farmers’ leaders to march to parliament on December 6 to press for legal guarantee to the minimum support price (MSP).

He warned that “no force in the country can suppress the voice of the farmer”. “Agitating farmers and stressed farmers are not good signs for the overall well-being of the country. Resolving the issues of the agriculture sector should be the top priority of the government,” added Dhankar.

Vice President questioned why there is no dialogue with the farmer while speaking at the centenary celebrations of ICAR-CIRCOT. He told Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was present on the stage, “Agriculture Minister, every moment is important for you. I request you, and as the person occupying the second highest post under the Constitution of India, I urge you to please tell me, was any promise made to the farmer, and why was that promise not fulfilled? What are we doing to fulfill the promise?”

He also said that “there was a movement last year, there is a movement this year too, and time is passing, but we are not doing anything.” Expressing his pain, he said, “Hon’ble Agriculture Minister, I am in pain. My concern is why this initiative has not been taken till now.”
