New Delhi, November 3: Faster internet speeds would be a great support for emerging technology and given this the Indian government has expanded minimum speed for broadband recognition was updated through a government notification earlier this year from 512 Kbps to 2 Mbps.
But is this enough to drive pan-India digitization and meet the need of emerging technologies ? There is a lot of tech, such as AI, AR, VR, and other IoT (Internet of Things) products and more, that require large bandwidths.
Some possible effects of increasing the minimum broadband speed to 100 Mbps in a country. The minimum broadband speed in India is 2 Mbps. The minimum speed for broadband recognition was updated by a notification from the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) earlier this year from 512 Kbps to 2 Mbps. Much recently, in the USA, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has proposed 100 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed in the country. That’s a stark difference in minimum broadband speeds between India and the USA.
It would require that the telcos and the internet service providers spend a lot of their money to get a lot less in return. What this means is that the tariffs in India are pretty low compared to the global standard, which is a good thing for the proliferation of the Internet as many users can use it, but it is bad for the business of the telecom industry.
Faster internet access would be the most basic advantage. Faster internet speeds are always welcomed as internet applications become heavier and more demanding to use. Environmental Impact with increasing minimum broadband speeds to 100 Mbps can have a positive environmental impact as well. Faster internet speeds can enable technologies that promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, such as remote monitoring and control systems for energy consumption in homes and businesses.
Besides, for entertainment, most of our daily entertainment now comes from the internet and its applications. So better the speeds, the better the experience. In addition, this would fasten E-Commerce growth and startups, which are vital for a nation’s economy. Thus, faster internet speeds would directly mean a boost for e-commerce businesses as people would be easily able to access internet platforms. This can also mean a great thing for the economy.
