New Delhi, December 8, 2025 — Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday in her speech in the Lok Sabha questioned the Modi government’s decision to initiate a debate on Vande Mataram. She said the national song is “part of India’s soul for 150 years” and does not require political contestation.
Speaking during the special discussion, Priyanka Gandhi said Vande Mataram awakened Indians from “the slumber of colonial rule,” gave them the courage to stand up to the British Empire, and became a moral force in the freedom struggle. “When we say Vande Mataram, we remember the pain, sacrifice, courage and moral strength of our freedom movement,” she said.
Calling the national song an expression of “modern Indian nationalism,” she argued that it united Indians with a political and ethical aspiration. “For 75 years since independence, this song has lived in the hearts of citizens. What is the need for this debate today?” she asked.
Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of misusing Parliament’s mandate and attempting to divert attention from urgent public issues. “Our responsibility is to the people who placed their trust in us. Yet today we are debating the national song. Why?” she said.
She alleged that the discussion was politically motivated. “There are two reasons: first, Bengal elections are approaching and the Prime Minister wants to play his role. Second, this government wants to target those who fought for independence and made sacrifices. It wants to create fresh accusations and distract the public,” she said.
She added that the government prefers to keep the country trapped in the past instead of addressing present-day challenges. “This government is no longer capable of looking to the future. The truth is that Modi ji is not the Prime Minister he once was. His confidence is diminishing, and his policies are weakening the country,” she said, claiming even treasury MPs “quietly agree.”
