Kolkata, November 16, 2025 — The ruling Trinamool Congress on Sunday trained its guns at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by alleging that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal has pained the Matua community.

The Matua community, which is known to have settled in West Bengal after migrating from Bangladesh, is a crucial vote base in the state. The BJP has sought to nurse the Matua constituency by framing the narrative that the Citizenship Act was amended to give the members the legitimacy of India’s citizenships. Lacking in documents, the community members fear that they would lose the right to vote in the elections next year in West Bengal amid the ongoing SIR.

“The human cost of SIR is now unmistakable. The anguish reflected on the faces of our Matua brothers and sisters speaks to the fear, uncertainty, and injustice they are being forced to endure,” the TMC said in a post on X.

The Mamata Banerjee-led outfit also stated that the Matua community is “caught in the tightening noose of the BJP’s corrosive politics.” “They have been pushed to such extremes that an indefinite hunger strike has become their only avenue to make themselves heard,” added the TMC.

Political observers in Kolkata state that the Matua community is vertically split in loyalty for the ruling TMC and the BJP. The TMC with its leaders is known to enjoy a formidable hold on the community. But the BJP sought to partake the electoral might of the community with the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) narrative.

“Throughout this ordeal, our leadership has remained in constant, compassionate engagement with them. Today, our delegation of representatives visited the dharna site,” added the TMC.

The ruling dispensation also stated that “we have stood by the Matua community through every trial and will continue to stand beside them for as long as required. If even one deserving citizen’s name is unjustly removed, the streets of Delhi will reverberate with the strength of Bengal’s resolve.”
