New Delhi, March 15: The social media handle of the All India Trinamool Congress released disturbing images of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Blood was seen oozing out of her forehead with signs of deep concussion.

A battery of doctors attended the injured chief minister. The medical superintendent of the hospital where she was treated by department heads of neurosurgeons, heart specialist, and others said that Banerjee possibly sustained injury after she had been pushed from behind. Banerjee’s sister, Kakori, also has told local reporters that someone had pushed her behind, and thus the chief minister sustained deep injuries.

Banerjee was taken to the hospital in a wheelchair. The state police is yet to make a statement on ways the serving chief minister was pushed from behind in a manner that she sustained serious injuries. But it was the social media team of her party which broke the news to the world. Reports suggest that the chief minister has been discharged after she was attended to by the doctors.

Political rivals of the chief minister have wished for her speedy recovery. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tagged the chief minister to say that “I pray for a quick recovery and the best health for Mamata Didi”. Similar expressions came forth from leaders of other parties too.

But the social media mercenaries have dug out the ‘Khela Hobe’ images of the chief minister from the 2019 pre-poll past. She had made an extraordinary comeback in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, and afterwards had scripted the ‘Ghar Wapsi’ of the party leaders who had deserted her to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Her image from a hospital bed with a heavily bandaged foot was the difference that she had made against the BJP in the last election.

Banerjee has seemingly sustained injury at a time when she faces a stiff challenge from the BJP which has stepped up campaign to lay claims on not less than 25 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats. Modi himself has led the BJP’s frontal assault on the Trinamool citadel by associating himself with the Sandeshkhali victims. The Central investigative agency has arrested the alleged kingpin of the Sandeshkhali horror Sheikh Shahrukh, and the leaked inputs suggest that he is cowering in the cell where he has been kept in contrast to his don like appearances in the state during court hearings.

The TMC has also decided to go solo in the Lok Sabha elections at a time when the Modi government is seen to have timed the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) solely to appeal to the Matua voters, estimated to have a population of one crore and more with footprints in 10-12 parliamentary constituencies. By all accounts, Banerjee faces an unprecedented challenge from the BJP which has shown an ability to unleash carpet bombing of electioneering in the state, which is apparently unmatched by others.

But Banerjee and her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal are among a few from within the Opposition camp who have shown skills to maneuver the political waters made violent by the BJP in the past. If Banerjee had allowed the BJP to score a goal with the Sandeshkhali episode, she appears now bracing to grab the game.
