Weighing Laggards

The Times of India in its Editorial has spotlighted the laggardness of the poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan on socio-economic parameters, while highlighting that these states failed to check the writ of mining and sand mafia, besides watching over flattening of hills. The daily also stressed that the three states despite enormous mineral wealth remain at the bottom 10 of the multi-dimensional poverty index, as well as nutrition, and migration remains top event.

While Chhattisgarh has been battling Maoist violence for decades, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have no alibi to have been average performer on socio-economic indicators. That the writ of a host of mafias run large in these states also question the ability of the political leaderships.

Biren Belligerence

The Asian Age in its Editorial has once more called for sacking of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on the back of the fresh episodes of killings in the state. Stating that the demand for the reintroduction of the “dreaded AFSPA” by a section of tribal groups is a mark of no-confidence against the CM, the New Delhi-based daily questioned the continuation of Singh in the office.

Both the CM and the Centre stay belligerent in addressing the unabated ethnic clashes in Manipur. The call from the saner voices to make the state arms free needs to be heard.

Kota Horror

The Telegraph in its Editorial has come down heavily against the stressful Kota coaching ecosystem, accusing it of abetting episodes wherein the students are dying by suicides. “…22 students have taken their lives this year. A recent survey revealed that four out of 10 students in Kota struggle with mental health problems like depression. Evidently, the intimidating and inhuman environment in Kota’s coaching centres — students are compelled to study for about 16-18 hours a day in cramped classrooms has made students vulnerable to mental stress,” added the Kolkata-based daily.

Flourishing coaching business is a tight slap on the face of the education system in schools which is found inadequate for entrance examinations. This reveals poverty of ideas at the entities and leadership entrusted with the administration of educational institutions.
