New Delhi, January 22: Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang at the World Economic Forum warned against perils of imminent tariff and trade wars. His remarks came amid the US President Donald Trump vowing imposition of tariff against imports from several countries, including China.
“With imminent tariff and trade wars, an ongoing tug of war between the forces for and against economic globalization, and intense rivalry between multilateralism and unilateralism, global governance is undergoing profound adjustments,” said the Chinese Vice Premier at Davos.
The annual business summit began on Wednesday. The theme of World Economic Forum (WEF) this year is ‘Collaboration for the Intelligent Age’.
“It is time to recall President Xi’s important speech. We should provide more stability and certainty for the world, and build a just world of common development,” added Ding in his address. He is the first top Chinese official to comment on Trump threat to impose tariffs against several countries.
“Eight years ago, President Xi Jinping delivered the important speech in Davos in which he pondered the question of our times — what has gone wrong with the world, and what should we do about it,” said the Chinese Vice Premier in his address to WEF.
He recalled Xi sending a “resounding message that China will support economic globalization, uphold and practice multilateralism, and join the effort to make the world a better place”. “Since then, President Xi had offered clear answers twice at the WEF to the questions of how to improve global governance and build a community with a shared future for mankind, which provided important guidance to the international community,” he added.
The Chinese officials have stated on social media platforms that the “reflection on President Xi Jinping’s past speeches at the WEF is timely in a world roiled by tariff threats, globalization’s crossroads, and the clash between multilateral and unilateral stances”. They said Xi’s words are like a lighthouse.
Ding argued for a global course towards a “just and jointly-developed world”. “It’s a powerful call to action, echoing the wisdom that can guide us through these turbulent times,” added the Chinese Vice Premier.
Yesterday, Xi had sent out a message to take additional responsibility in economic affairs of the world. “As the rotating chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, China is willing to work with Russia and other member states to usher in a new phase of SCO featuring higher quality development and greater responsibility,” Xi said in a message yesterday.
