Lok Sabha elections 2024 invites closer scrutiny for various intriguing shades

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, June 4: A day before the counting of the votes, the US-based Time magazine came out with a long form article to extent of hate in the Lok Sabha elections. The newsmagazine accused the social media platforms affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for peddling hate contents.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel came out with an alarming claim. “The numbers of the machines such as the control unit, the ballot unit, and the VVPAT had been changed against the original numbers assigned to them. The Form 17C provided by the Election Commission has numbers changed for such units in Rajnandangaon parliamentary constituency, as well as several other Lok Sabha seats,” Baghel posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The communication department of the Congress, Jairam Ramesh, can take credit for starting the wildfire against the district magistrates. Ramesh had claimed that Union Minister for Home Affairs, Amit Shah, had called up 150 district magistrates ahead of the counting of the votes.

Addressing a presser in Purnia in Bihar, former Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav gave a call to his workers to come with ‘kafan’ to the vote counting centres. “Kal Mahabharat hoga (the great war will unfold tomorrow),” said Yadav.

The Congress president, Mallikarjuna Kharge, issued an appeal to the district magistrates to follow “dharma” and discharge their duties as per the rule book.

The avalanche of distrust against the Election Commission ahead of the counting of the votes has no parallels. The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, invited a meme fest with his presser yesterday.

As many as 33 poll officials had died on the day of the polling for the last phase of elections on June 1. Deaths with such numbers in any parts of the world could be sickening. The western media spotlighted the deaths of the poll officials.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also accounts for a mention in the various shades of the Lok Sabha elections. The BSP supremo Mayawati had launched her nephew Akash Anand as a possible heir to her political legacy.

Akash Anand plunged into electioneering with all guns blazing, singling out the BJP for his most vicious attacks. He was summarily removed from the election trails.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, undeniably, takes the pivotal shade in the Lok Sabah elections. Modi took on himself the task to polarise the voters. The BJP tally in West Bengal will affirm the success of his strategy.

Former Congress president, Rahul Gandhi, sharpened his ‘angry man’ image. He didn’t spare even the media.

The poll verdict may also reveal if the people endorse ‘angry man’ politician. By not contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi parliamentary seat, Rahul Gandhi invited the scrutiny of the media for not being brave enough.

Implosion in the ranks of the Bharath Rashtra Samithi, which only a few months ago was ambitious to forge a third front, is indeed the dark shade of the Lok Sabha poll.

Additionally, the spotlight on the health conditions of the Odisha Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, may ring loudly for the times to come after the dust settles on the Lok Sabha elections.
