Biden doublespeak on democracy in Islamic world sharpens

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, September 25: In the second month of the Interim Government of Bangladesh headed by Nobel laureate Muhammed Yunus, Islamist fundamentalists are holding march of strength on the streets of Dhaka. The Islamist fundamentalists vow that they will not allow Durga Puja celebrations at places where they have been held for years.

“Bangladeshi Islamic extremists are demonstrating on the streets of Dhaka, declaring that they will not allow Durga Puja to be held in the field where the Puja committee has organized it every year in Uttara, Dhaka,” said Arifa Rahman Ruma, an associate professor of Bangladesh Open University, in a post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

The outgoing US President, Joe Biden, is known to have warm relations with the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Muhammed Yunus. The Biden administration held the centre stage in raising heat against the ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the run up to the national elections that she won.

“Just to be clear, I have qualms about Biden admin’s warm and fuzzy hug of Yunus at UNGA at such an early time, mainly because of unnecessary and negative impact on US-India strategic partnership. But for New Delhi, the geostrategic calculus is different,” noted Derek Grossman in a Linkedin post that tagged his column “India can weather its Bangladesh headache”.

Yunus is being feted at the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) meeting. French President Emannuel Macron also warmly met Yunus. The Bangladesh top official had been residing in Paris until the students’ leaders handed over the baton of the Islamic nation to him after violent uprisals.

Biden administration had slotted the Hasina regime in an odd way. The Biden administration was conspicuous with its blind eyes to the jailing of Imran Khan, former prime minister of Pakistan, by the military regime.

Khan’s political party, the PTI, was banned at the behest of the military regime. Yet, the Biden administration didn’t assert its “moral exhortation” upon Islamabad for “free and fair elections” and democracy.

In about two months, the new regime in Bangladesh freed dreaded Islamist radicals who vow harms to India. The Yunus-led administration is least heard on the ongoing targeting of the minority Hindus. But the US, which comes out with the state of religious freedom in developing countries, is yet to caution the Yunus administration.

The strategic thinkers argue that the blindsiding in the Biden administration is aligned to its long-term tactics to balance the Asian powers. They argue that the US is aiming at double-check on India, in the western front with Pakistan and the eastern front with Bangladesh.
