UP’s ‘Operation Bhedia’ catches ‘man-eater’ wolf
Captured ‘man-eater’ wolf was terror in 25 UP districts

New Delhi, August 29: The ‘Operation Bhediya’ of the Uttar Pradesh forest department on Thursday nabbed the fourth ‘man-eating’ wolf. The UP government said that the captured wolf had terrorised the people in 25 districts in the state.
The forest department of UP captured the fourth wolf in Mahsi area in the Bahraich district. The forest department of the state had earlier nabbed three other wolves.
“The wolf was trapped in a cage set up in the Sisayya floodplain of Mahsi. The capture of the predator provided much-needed relief to local villagers,” said a senior official of the UP forest department.

“With Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vigilant monitoring and the swift action of the Forest department officials, another wolf was finally captured from Bahraich village on Thursday morning. The wolf had terrorized residents in over 35 villages and with its capture the local population is breathing a sigh of relief,” the CMO Office said in a media statement.
The state government said that “the Forest department has caught four wolves from the Bahraich area, with the latest one set to be relocated to Gorakhpur Zoo”.
Notably, the one captured on Thursday morning was the most ferocious of the four wolves caught so far, added the CMO in the statement. “As the news of the ‘man-eater’ wolf capture spread, a wave of relief swept through the nearby villages, and the local community praised the Forest department’s tireless work in securing their safety,” added the CMO.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Sanjay Srivastava, informed that the wolf was first detected by a thermal drone at 11 p.m. on Wednesday night.
“It was monitored again through a drone around 5 a.m. the following morning. The wolf’s footprints were spotted, and the local Forest department officials quickly sprang into action,” said Srivastava.
He also stated that “after a challenging effort, they successfully captured the wolf from the floodplain of Sisayya village at around 10:45 a.m. The search for two other wolves is still ongoing”.
Srivastava further stated that the “drone mapping was carried out, and efforts were made throughout the day on Wednesday”. “By continuously tracking its movements, the wolf’s location was identified from its footprints on Thursday morning,” he added.

The team then resorted to physico-chemical immobilization and successfully captured the wolf using a net, said Srivastava. He added that the captured wolf would be sent to the Gorakhpur Zoo.
Earlier, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Department Sudhir Kumar Sharma, and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Sanjay Srivastava arrived in Bahraich on Wednesday.
“After visiting the affected villages and reassuring the residents, the Forest Minister confirmed that the department’s team was fully equipped to capture the wolf, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally overseeing the situation,” said the UP CMO in the media statement.
Within 24 hours of the Forest Minister’s arrival, the man-eater wolf was successfully captured, added the statement.
